Maintenance Schedules

Clothes Dryer Maintenance Schedule

A complete maintenance schedule for clothes dryers — daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks.

Routine maintenance on a clothes dryer is the difference between an appliance that lasts the warranty period and one that lasts 15-20 years. The bulk of premature appliance failures trace back to maintenance items that were never performed: filters never changed, drains never cleared, gaskets never wiped down. The schedule below is the consolidated best practice across major manufacturers' published guidelines, organized by frequency so you can build it into your household routine.

Daily and per-use tasks. Clean the lint screen before every single load. This is non-negotiable — restricted airflow from a clogged lint screen is the leading cause of long dry times, energy waste, and dryer fires. Hold the screen up to a light source after cleaning to confirm it is fully clear; fabric softener residue can clog the mesh in ways that are not visible to the eye.

Weekly tasks. Wipe the moisture sensor strips inside the drum (two metal bars near the lint filter opening) with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball — fabric softener residue dulls the sensors and causes early shutoff. Inspect the drum interior for any items that might have melted or stained (crayons, lipstick, stickers); clean with a non-abrasive cleaner before the next load.

Monthly tasks. Wash the lint screen with dish soap and a soft brush to remove fabric softener residue from the mesh. Vacuum the lint filter housing thoroughly with a long crevice tool — significant lint accumulates in the housing that the screen never catches. Wipe down the drum interior with a microfiber cloth.

Quarterly tasks. Disconnect the dryer from power (and gas, where applicable), pull it out from the wall, and inspect the transition hose between the dryer and the wall connection. Replace any flex or foil hose with rigid metal duct. Vacuum behind the dryer.

Annual tasks. Clean the full exhaust duct from the dryer to the outdoor termination — disconnect, run a long-handled brush kit through, and vacuum the loosened debris from both ends. Inspect the outdoor vent cap for free movement and clear any bird's nest or accumulated lint. Vacuum the inside of the dryer cabinet (after disconnecting power) — lint accumulates around the heating element and is a fire hazard. Have a service technician inspect a gas dryer's combustion chamber and gas connections every two years.

Following this schedule consistently extends the useful life of your clothes dryer significantly and minimizes the unexpected service calls that often arrive at the worst times.
